Which Internet service provider to choose?

If you are renting an apartment by yourself there is a big chance that the Internet access will not be included. There are 2 big providers in Hawaii: Hawaiian Telcom and Oceanic Time Warner Cable. Avoid any other providers (especially CLEAR).

There is not much to say here. The Internet connection is slow and expensive compared to developed European cities. Feels like I’m always complaining.. :)

So let’s go to the pricing. If 7 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speed is enough for you then I would recommend Hawaiian Telcom package for $ 39.99 / month. There is no activation fee, no minimum period, and modem is for free as-well. The easiest way is to go to Hawaiian Telcom store (I went to the one on Kapiolani) and get your modem. After that it’ll take them around 3-4 days to get you going. All apartments have phone jacks (they will check your location on their computer ¬†before they give you modem). So my simple suggestion is go with Hawaiian Telcom, it worked great for me now for over a year. Modems have wireless router built-in so you don’t need to buy separate router.

You can cancel your subscription whenever you want. If you move, modem goes with you. It’s that simple. But if you need higher speeds (especially upload) then the only option is to go with Oceanic Time Warner Cable. I didn’t hear any complaints (with exception of pricing..) against them. Pick the one that feels better for your current situation. I can give you just my subjective recommendation for Hawaiian Telcom.

And since I know you’re all lazy and want direct links to stuff, here are direct links to price lists from Hawaiian Telcom and Oceanic Cable:

If you really want to do detailed analysis you could actually get both and after trial period cancel one of them. Both providers offer trial period where you can cancel and they will not charge you anything. Depends on how much effort you want to put in this :)

“Thanks regarding sharing your opinions. I’d personally also love to state that video games have been anytime evolving. Today’s engineering and inventions have dished up create smart and enjoyable games. These forms of entertainment game titles were certainly not that sensible once the real strategy was first of all being tried out. Just just like other methods of technology, video games as well have needed to evolve by simply many many years. This itself is testimony about the fast carrying on with development of games.”

As for the pricing, Time Warner is very comparable to internet rates in urban BC, Canada.

Well when you click on the Hawaii telecom link it has a number to show that link is being tracked that usually means that someone is getting money for referring people. I have Clear and Love it, I have had it for over 3 years now. I am very close to the antenna and at night I can see it through the trees so that is why I have almost solid bars for my signal strength. If you get Clear make sure you are close (mine is about half mile away) to the antenna. They also provide a full refund (As I remember) if you are not satisfied within so much time. My Sister got Clear but she lives in a hole in the ground (actually a dip in the land) so she did not have a very good signal. They gave her a full refund. I do not do any gaming so I can’t vouch for that but I do stream to my Roku box usually just fine.
