Get Hawaii State ID

As students in Hawaii, even though we’re not U.S. citizens, we’re still able to get Hawaii State Identification Card. There are at least 2 reasons why you would want that as an international student:

  1. This is official document. You don’t need passport anymore when you go out drinking (and have to prove you’re 21.. yeah 21.. that’s U.S.) or when you’re flying inside of United States (e.g., when I flied to Maui and Big Island I took only my State ID with me, no passport).
  2. You get discounts for having Hawaii State ID. Those discounts are usually referred as Kamaaina Discounts and you will see them all around Hawaii. For example, you pay 50% less (6 $) to get to Honolulu ZOO, you don’t have to pay entrance fee for Hanauma Bay (you save 7.50 $).

So where can you get one? You can get one at Kekuanao’a Building. First you will need your Student ID from HPU (or any other university if you don’t go to HPU). Then just bring that, your Passport with Visa, and I-20 form there. You don’t have to bring your picture, they’ll take one there on the spot (so.. look pretty).

Oh, if you don’t want to wait in the long lane, you can speed up the process with using online form here: https://stateid.ehawaii.gov/. After doing first the online form you will be able to enter Express lane in office and save around an hour or two (on busy days). I suggest doing that since I made a mistake of going directly there and had to wait around two and a half hours.

Price for State ID is around 18 $ and it will save you that amount of money and time in just few days. Anyway, it is cool to have Hawaii ID :)
